タブノキ・サクラ(碇神社)(被爆樹木)
  • Yoshino Cherry and Tabunoki (Ikari Shrine)

Ikari Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Hiroshima. Before the war, there used to be a vibrant green forest that protected the shrine. Here you will find a tabunoki and Somei-Yoshino cherry tree that were exposed to the bombing 1,800 meters from the hypocenter. The above-ground portion of both trees were all completely burned away, but from these burned stumps, new buds grew. The trees have grown admirably, with the tabunoki now at 20 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 1.45 meters, and the Somei-Yoshino cherry tree at 9.0 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 1.45 meters.
