Ginkgo Tree, Japanese Black Pine, and Japanese Sago Palm (Myojoin Temple)
Inside the spacious temple complex of Myōjō-in Temple, located 1,780 meters from the hypocenter, are three hibaku trees: a ginkgo (10 meters tall, 3.00 meter trunk circumference), a Japanese sago palm (3.5 meters tall), and a Japanese black pine (9 meters tall, 2.25 meter trunk circumference). The ginkgo used to be three times as tall; however, due to trunk rot, it was cut down to its current height. From the roots of the sago palm, 19 new trunks grew, giving the tree a dignified appearence not often associated with hibaku trees. The black pine, while leaning, is still thriving. You can tell it has lived a long life from the cracked bark on the tree.
