• Japanese Sago Palm (Honganji Hiroshima Betsuin Temple)

The sago palm near the bell tower at Nishi-Hongan-ji Hiroshima Betsu-in Temple was exposed to the bombing at a distance of 1,150 meters from the hypocenter. At the time of the bombing, the tree was located in front of the main hall, built in 1609. While the main temple hall was totally destroyed in the bombing, the sago palm survived, and when the main hall was rebuilt in 1964, the palm was replanted in its current location next to the bell tower.
