Eucalyptus and Giant Pussy Willow (Hiroshima Castle)
These hibaku trees are located at the former site of Hiroshima Castle, 740 meters from the hypocenter. The inside of the trunk of the giant pussy willow is hollow, but the tree continues to thrive under the diligent care of a tree doctor. At a small distance from this tree is a eucalyptus tree that stands 10 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 2.75 meters. Keiji Nakazawa, the well-known author of the manga Barefoot Gen also penned Under the Eucalyptus Tree based on this tree. There is a photo of this tree from when it was blackened in the bombing.
